What it is
Nepal's fiscal year runs from mid-July (Shrawan 1) to mid-July (Asar end). Q1 ends mid-October, Q2 mid-January, Q3 mid-April, Q4 mid-July.
Each quarterly report prints the income statement two ways. 'This quarter' is only the latest three months. 'Up to this quarter' adds all quarters since Shrawan 1. In Q3, that is nine months. In Q4, it is the full year.
The balance sheet has no such split; it is always a snapshot at quarter end.
EPS, ROE, ROA and most ratios are computed on the year-to-date column and then annualised.
How it is calculated
Year to date (Qn) = sum of quarters 1 to n. This quarter = Year to date (Qn) − Year to date (Qn−1).
Worked on Nabil Bank Limited, FY 2082/83 Q4
NABIL's FY 2082/83 Q4 report: 'up to this quarter' net profit of Rs 790.58 crore is the whole year. The 'this quarter' column is that figure minus the nine-month profit reported in Q3.
What good looks like
Use year to date for EPS and ratios and for comparing with last year's same quarter. Use 'this quarter' to spot a sudden change, for example a jump in provisions in Q4.
Watch out
- Comparing Q2 year-to-date profit with Q1 year-to-date is comparing six months with three; it will always look like growth.
- Q4 'this quarter' is derived and absorbs year-end adjustments, so it is often the odd one.
- Some apps and sites quote the single-quarter EPS as if it were yearly.
In Nepal
Nepali fiscal quarters end on Asoj, Poush, Chaitra and Asar month-ends. Listed companies must publish the quarterly report within 30 days of quarter end (Securities Registration and Issue Regulations), so Q1 results arrive by mid-November, Q4 by mid-August.
Questions
Year to date, as the bank reports it, with annualised EPS stored separately when the bank prints one.
It is the full year minus nine months, so all year-end provisions, bonus and tax adjustments land in it.
